What is the BARF Philosophy?

At Almafiel, we believe that proper nutrition can change everything: the coat, vitality, digestion… even the way an animal inhabits its body and its world. That’s why, among so many nutritional trends, the BARF philosophy has been one of our main sources of inspiration.

BARF stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food. It’s not just about feeding raw food: it’s about respecting the carnivorous nature of dogs and cats and providing nutrition that is as close as possible to what they would eat in the wild — with fresh, unprocessed foods and minimal human intervention.

Why does the BARF philosophy inspire us?

  • Value freshness: Fresh ingredients have a more comprehensive and bioavailable nutritional profile. Vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and amino acids appear in their most active form.
  • Prioritize variety: There is no single magic food or ingredient. Variety is key to achieving a complete nutritional profile — something we fully embrace when selecting functional supplements.
  • Rooted in nature: The foundation of the BARF approach is to avoid artificial ingredients, fillers, and unnecessary additives. This philosophy also guides all our formulas: we use natural, clean, and functional ingredients.
  • Listen to the animal: BARF encourages observing the individual response of each animal. This inspires us deeply: we believe in adapting nutrition to every stage, biology, and need.
  • Promote preventive health: A more balanced and digestible diet strengthens the immune system, reduces allergies, improves oral health, and maintains stable energy levels. These are precisely the areas we address with our supplements.

However, not all guardians can (or want to) apply the complete BARF diet. Whether due to lifestyle, logistical issues, or the age or condition of the animal, we understand that every home has its own reality. That’s why at Almafiel we seek to bring the best of this philosophy to all animals — without extremism and with a great sense of responsibility.

A balanced perspective

Not all of our products are strictly raw foods, but they are designed to add real nutritional quality to any type of diet: from high-quality feed to a homemade or mixed diet. We supplement where there are gaps, reinforce the essentials, and do so with respect and transparency.

Because if there is one thing that inspires us about the BARF approach, it is its pursuit of consistency: giving animals what their bodies truly need, without disguises, without empty marketing claims, and without shortcuts. Nurturing with intention, with discernment, and with love. That is our guiding principle. And on that path, the BARF philosophy has been a powerful guide.
